Films have been nominated on the 2013 Academy Awards Nominations and were announced by the show’s host Seth MacFarlane with actress Emma Stone.
Best Picture:
Amour
Argo
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Django Unchained
Les Miserables
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty
Comment: As much as I love Amour and Beasts of the Southern Wild, I don’t think they will win. Moonrise Kingdom, which is 2012′s equivalent to Midnight in Paris, and The Master have been snubbed; Earlier predictions such as Hitchcock, The Hobbit, Cloud Atlas, and Anna Karenina fell; Argo may surprise us; Les Miserables has been dissed by some people, and Django seems like a crowd favorite. But the contenders for this year are Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty.
Prediction: Lincoln
Best Actor:
Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook)
Daniel Day Lewis (Lincoln)
Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables)
Joaquin Phoenix (The Master)
Denzel Washington (Flight)
Comment: Hugh Jackman may have been a shoo-in on the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs, but he has no chance here. John Hawkes in The Sessions, Jack Black in Bernie, and Richard Gere in The Arbitrage have been snubbed. This year, the winner is quite obvious and he is a president.
Prediction: Daniel Day Lewis
Best Actress
Emannuelle Riva (Amour)
Naomi Watts (The Impossible)
Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook)
Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty)
Quvenzhane Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild)
Comment: There are a lot of great performances by different actresses last 2012, but unfortunately they had to pick only 5 nominees. I was actually rooting for Marion Cottilard from Rust and Bone, who was nominated on the Golden Globes. I guess, on this list, I would fancy Emannuelle Riva, who is amazing in Amour, or Quvenzhane, who is the youngest best actress nominee at age 9, to win. The crowd seems to like Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain but we’ll see.
Prediction: Emmanuelle Riva or Jennifer Lawrence
Best Supporting Actor
Alan Arkin (Argo)
Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained)
Robert De Niro (Silver Linings Playbook)
Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master)
Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln)
Comment: This is a hard one. Alan Arkin plays a superb fictional character in Argo but he’s character is too small. People are crying foul to the absence of Leonardo DiCaprio but they still have hope for Christoph. Fassbender was also snubbed for playing the viral David in Prometheus. Sorry Robert, I guess you’re not gonna win this one.
Prediction: Tommy Lee Jones
Best Supporting Actress
Amy Adams (The Master)
Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables)
Helen Hunt (The Sessions)
Jackie Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook)
Sally Field (Lincoln)
Comment: Anne had been a shoo in for this one because of her performance as the unlucky Fantine.
Prediction: Anne Hathaway
Best Director
Michael Haneke (Amour)
Behn Zeitlin (Beasts of the Southern Wild)
Ang Lee (Life of Pi)
Steven Spielberg (Lincoln)
David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook)
Comment: The absence of Kathryn Bigelow, Ben Affleck, Paul Thomas Anderson and Quentin Tarantino baffled a lot of people, but four of the five are dead-on deserving. Behn Zeitlin did a good job but the others are better.
Prediction: Steven Spielberg
My list of this year’s snubs: (my opinion)
Moonrise Kingdom
Looper
Perks of Being a Wallflower
The Intouchables
Rust and Bone
Quartet
The Master
Cloud Atlas
The Invisible War
The Turin Horse
I forgot to include Anthony Hopkins as Hitchcock on the snubbed list part
